This routine saves me every time after a weekend of indulgence because life’s meant to be enjoyed and savored, whenever possible.
but to balance things out for my sensitive tummy, i pull out my favorite ceramic pot to make a batch of this debloating tonic. the chinese way of debloating starts with thinking about your triggers: not just what you ate, but how you live.
a little too many late nights, cold drinks, rushed meals, travel, long periods of stress? in chinese medicine, bloating is your body asking to be cared for more intentionally. it asks for warmth, for softness, for foods that restore instead of stimulate.
this pot is built around ingredients designed to ease and calm the digestive system, using fiber packed ingredients that are soothing to the system.
adzuki beans are the quiet workhorse here: earthy, and known in chinese medicine for helping the body release excess water without draining energy. job’s tears (yi yi ren) take that a step further, supporting digestion and helping reduce that heavy, swollen feeling. mung beans cool internal heat that often shows up after rich foods (especiallt dairy) or alcohol, while still being easy on the gut.
dried orange peel (chen pi) wakes up digestion while fresh orange slices add a bit of gentle and natural sweetness. red jujubes round out the sweetness, nourishing the blood and calming the nervous system, which always helps with digestion.
here’s how to make some at home —

Instructions
Wash the orange (1) very well then peel, making sure to keep the peel for the recipe.
To a pot, add the pieces of orange, 1/2 of the peel, and adzuki beans (1 Tbsp), mung beans (1 Tbsp), and job’s tears (1 Tbsp).
Drop in the ginger (3 slices), red jujubes (2) then fill in water (4 cups).
Bring to a boil then simmer for 30-45 mins.
Once the beans are soft, tonic is ready to serve with a bit of honey (1 Tbsp).
Make sure to eat the beans to get all the benefits.
