When your skin’s not bouncing back like it used to, no matter how much water you’re drinking, it’s time to start addressing the deeper problem…In your 20s, hydration is a surface-level game. You drink a liter of water, your cells soak it up, and you move on. But in your 30s? You drink and drink, but the water just passes through you.

In Chinese medicine, we look at hydration as a structural thing, not just a daily intake. Think of your body like a garden. If you pour a bucket of water onto dry, cracked earth, it doesn’t actually sink in, the water just runs off the surface. To truly hydrate, you have to improve the soil’s ability to hold that moisture.

We call this Fortifying your Yin.

For this recipe, we are choosing ingredients that “build the hydration” into your system, using ingredients like:

  • Chicken Feet & Leg: These are the original collagen supplements. Chicken feet are packed with connective tissue that, when steamed, turns into a gelatinous broth that literally plumps your skin from the inside out ☯️
  • Shiitake Mushrooms: In TCM, these are “Yin” powerhouses. They nourish the blood and support the kidneys, which are the root of your “glow” ✨
  • Daikon: This is the “internal cleanser.” It clears heat and ensures that while we are nourishing, we aren’t creating “dampness” or bloating 🍲
  • Onions & Ginger: To circulate the energy, ensuring the nutrients actually reach your skin 🧅

Instructions

  1. For this soup you can use any heavy bottom pot but my preference is the yunnan steam clay pot!

  2. To the bottom of the pot, start by laying out the daikon pieces (½ cup), then sliced onion (½).

  3. Meanwhile, rehydrate the shiitake mushrooms (4) by letting them soak in hot water for ~20 mins.

  4. In the meantime, wash the chicken (1) and remove the toe nails from the chicken feet (4).

  5. To the pot, add the rehydrated mushrooms (4) and just a 0.25 cup of that soaking liquid.

  6. Layer in the chicken and feet on top, with ginger (3 slices), red jujube dates (2), and shaoxing wine (2 Tbsp).

  7. Place the pot on medium to low heat, letting it simmer and steam for 2 hours.

  8. Naturally, without much water, the ingredients will steam together and produce its own soup and the taste is so pure — fun fact, steaming also helps to preserve the nutrients a bit more than simmering.

  9. Season to taste with a bit of salt and enjoy.
